In the Kasbah quarter of the Marrakech médina, easily accessible by taxi, minibus and horse-drawn calèche and only yards from the Royal Palace, Les Borjs de la Kasbah is a newly-created boutique hotel developed over a period of four years from a complex of six small town houses and one riad by its Franco-British owners and their young Moroccan architect.

On entering this haven of calm you will be struck by the atmosphere of contemporary refinement and arabo-moorish charm, the whole contrasting sharply with the frenetic activity of the thronged medina beyond its walls. Our aim is to provide a high quality of experience for our visitors in terms of accommodation and meals with service provided by professionally attentive, friendly but unobtrusive restaurant and housekeeping staff. For its part, the Reception team is always delighted to help with general advice and to make bookings for excursions around Marrakech and the surrounding area.

Created entirely by local craftsmen, our small hotel has been designed to reflect the traditional architectural style of a Moroccan riad in which geometric symmetry, intricate plaster decoration, wrought ironwork, colourful floor tiles (bejmat) and tadelakt wall coatings (polished lime-based plaster tinted in warm shades) feature prominently. The highest level of modern comforts is also assured, traditional features throughout being combined with contemporary overtones in the stylish furnishing and décor.

All rooms are disposed around, and look out on, one of the four original patios, each planted with flowering shrubs or orange trees, a couple of them echoing to the sound of water spilling from ornamental fountains. A few yards away, at the foot of a renovated borj (one of the defensive towers built into the ancient walls of the Kasbah), a separate leisure area has been created (operational from July 2007) to house a spa, with hammam, jacuzzi and massage rooms, together with a 10m swimming pool with sun deck and poolside cafeteria alongside.

Location


Just 10 minutes from the airport, Les Borjs de la Kasbah is situated on the southern edge of the Marrakech médina on the Rue du Méchouar (or Rue du Palais Royal), some 15 minutes on foot from the Place Jemaa el Fna, the pulsating central square, and souks.

To reach us, enter the médina via the Bab Aganou (city gate) and then, passing the much-visited site of the Tombeaux Saâdiens on the left, follow the Rue de la Kasbah for 400 yards till the end. Turning left here, you will find the hotel some 200 yds along on the right.
 

Facilities

 

As well as its 18 en-suite bedrooms, the hotel provides a number of small but comfortably-appointed public rooms including a lounge bar, adjacent restaurant patio with ornamental fountain, two sitting rooms and a meeting room, all opening onto the pretty main courtyard with its central fountain and four orange trees. There is also a small shop (see Other Services).

 

Discreetly located a few yards away at the foot of a renovated borj, a 270m² leisure area is being created. Planted with young trees and potted shrubs, this contains the spa building, with its hammam bathhouse, jacuzzi, massage rooms and poolside bar, below, as well as a 10m swimming pool with adjacent sun deck. This will be operational from July 2007.

The 18 sound-proofed, well insulated rooms, dispersed between four separate patios, are each well appointed with bath or shower (some have both), heating and air conditioning, personal room safe, hairdryer, minibar, telephone and satellite TV. Five rooms on ground floor level (3 of them singles) offer easy access while the remainder, on first floor, are reached, respectively, via 5 separate stairways. Though very similar in terms of decor, no two bedrooms are identical. Room prices (see Rates) are based mainly on room size although, in addition to their spaciousness, Suites benefit from additional features and services, while Premium rooms also have space for a sitting area.

Each of the three suites is equipped with an additional divan bed for a child (5-12 years). Older children may reserve a single room.
 

Restaurant


In the hotel’s Le Jasmin restaurant our aim is to provide high quality meals, for outside diners as well as residents, based on a range of interesting menus and sophisticated à la carte dishes. The emphasis is on modern French cuisine, some of it with certain local influences, as well as a number of Moroccan specialities, all prepared from fresh local produce by our French-trained chef, Aziz, and his experienced local team.
 
There is a set daily-changing menu (typically 150 dh) and a range of à la carte dishes (typically 250-300 dhs for 3 courses), excluding the cost of inexpensive Moroccan wines.
Continental breakfasts may be taken in bedrooms or, where possible, on adjoining terraces. When numbers permit, a more varied, generous buffet including fruit, juices, yoghurts and home made bread, viennoiseries and pastries, will be served on the dining patio. Cooked breakfasts are also available.

The hotel bar serves a range of familiar spirits as well as local beers and interesting house cocktails.

We should point out that while smoking is permitted in the open dining patio a no-smoking policy applies in the dining room itself and also in the bar.
